Terms of Service
These terms are a working draft. They have not been reviewed by a lawyer, they bind no one, and they are not yet offered to anyone. Passages marked [[CONFIRM: …]] depend on a decision still to be made.
Draft of October 15, 2026. Effective date: [[CONFIRM: effective date, once in force]]
1. What Family Ledger is
Family Ledger is an iPhone app that reads a household’s bank accounts (read-only, through Plaid) and shows what the household may safely spend before its next payday. It is operated by [[CONFIRM: legal name and address of the operator]] (“we”). By using the app you (“you”) agree to these terms. If you do not agree, do not use it.
2. A budgeting aid, not advice
The app is informational. It is not financial, tax, legal or investment advice, and we are not your advisor. A number in the app is our best reading of the data we are given, and we do not guarantee that it is right. Bank data comes from third parties and may be late, missing or wrong. The Clerk, an AI model, proposes bills, paydays, categories and notes; its proposals can be mistaken, and you are responsible for confirming or amending them. Check anything that matters against your bank before relying on it.
3. The app never moves money
The bank connection is read-only. The app cannot move, send, withdraw or pay money, and nothing in it does so. When it tells you to set money aside, you do that yourself, at your bank.
4. Signing in, households and members
You sign in with Apple. You must be an adult able to make a binding agreement. A household is a ledger shared by its members. Anyone a member invites, and who accepts, joins the household and can see and change everything in it, including the bank data and the notes. Invite only people you trust. Any member can close the ledger for the whole household (see section 8). You are responsible for what is done under your sign-in.
5. Acceptable use
Use the app only for your own household’s finances and as the law allows. Do not try to break, probe or overload it, reach data that is not your household’s, reverse-engineer it, resell it, or use it to connect accounts you are not entitled to see.
6. Subscription and price
[[CONFIRM: price, free trial, renewal and cancellation, all through Apple. Typical wording: the app is a paid subscription billed by Apple through the App Store; it renews until cancelled; manage or cancel in your Apple account settings; refunds are handled by Apple]]
7. Third parties
The app depends on Apple (sign-in, notifications, billing), Plaid (bank connection), Supabase (hosting) and an AI provider. Their own terms apply to their services, and we are not responsible for their failures.
8. Ending your use, and Close the ledger
You may stop at any time. Close the ledger (Household, then Privacy) ends the bank links at Plaid, erases the household’s data and deletes the sign-in of the member who closed it. It cannot be undone. Deleting the app does not close the ledger or cancel a subscription; cancel that in your Apple account. We may suspend or end your access if you break these terms or the law, or if we have to stop the service, and we will try to give notice and the chance to take a copy of your data first. [[CONFIRM: wind-down and notice period]]
9. Your data
It is yours. What we do with it is set out in our Privacy Policy, which is part of these terms.
10. Disclaimers
The app is provided “as is” and “as available.” To the extent the law allows, we make no promise that it will be uninterrupted, error-free or fit for any particular purpose. [[CONFIRM: counsel to complete the disclaimer, including any warranties that cannot be excluded where you live]]
11. Limit of liability
[[CONFIRM: limitation of liability: counsel to supply the cap, the exclusions, and the carve-outs the law requires, for example for death, personal injury or fraud]]
12. Governing law
[[CONFIRM: governing law and where disputes are heard]]
13. Changes
We may change these terms. If a change matters, we will tell you in the app before it takes effect; using the app after that means you accept it. If you do not accept it, close the ledger.
